In October 2015, Paul’s mostly south-facing garden was a carpark with an 8m garage. Due to his career change at the same time from being a senior teacher to a restorer of mid-20th century furniture, Paul wanted to bring his interests in this era to his garden, including “a slight tropical feel from the United States.” To do this, banana plants and a gunnera manicata have been added, along with a “gin terrace” under the pergola.
Paul likes the fact that most of the plants in the garden were free, often donated by friends and family, or bought for a low price e.g. from Gumtree. He revels in knowing that with some of the tropical plants, “When you water or feed them, you can hear them gulping!”
